Allied Countries

The allies were a group of mostly democratic nations that fought against Germany, Japan, Italy, and their Axis friends.
The main Allied countries included: United States, Great Britain, and Canada.

The Allies are in BLUE <--> The Axis are in RED

There were other Allied countries, including some from Central and South America: (Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, Coast Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Colombia).
Eventually even the Soviet Union would join the Allies when they were attacked by Germany on June 21st, 1941. This was in violation of a non-aggression agreement they had made with Germany. (The Soviet Union had a communist government a nation where all factories and property is owned by the government, instead of by individual citizens. It is controlled by a dictator, so the people only have the rights the government thinks they should.).

You see how the Soviet Union was next to Europe.
Allied Leaders:
A country needs VERY strong leaders during time of war, and each of the Allies had a strong leader.
United States

Franklin D. Roosevelt

The leader of the United States during WW II was Franklin D. Roosevelt. This picture was taken the day after the Japanese did a surprise attack at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th, 1941.  Look at the expression President Roosevelt has as he speaks to both parts of the U.S. Congress and the American people. What does that expression mean? By the way, how is he communicating with ALL of the American people?) Yes, the same FDR who lead the U.S. through the Great Depression.
This is part of a speech given by President Roosevelt after the attack by Japan. You can see a video of this below the red box:

"Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and of the House of Representatives:
Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy (famous for a bad reason)-- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

Harry S. Truman

Harry S. Truman would take over when Mr. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945. It was he that would give the orders to use the very first Atomic Weapon.

This is what he said to the American people after the bomb was dropped.

August 6th, 1945 - Harry S. Truman - U.S. President

Sixteen hours ago an American airplane dropped one bomb on Hiroshima and destroyed its usefulness to the enemy. That bomb had more power than 20,000 tons of T.N.T. It had more than two thousand times the blast power of the British "Grand Slam" which is the largest bomb ever yet used in the history of warfare.

The Japanese began the war from the air at Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid many fold. And the end is not yet. With this bomb we have now added a new and revolutionary increase in destruction to supplement the growing power of our armed forces. In their present form these bombs are now in production and even more powerful forms are in development.

It is an atomic bomb. It is a harnessing of the basic power of the universe. The force from which the sun draws its power has been loosed against those who brought war to the Far East.

Great Britain
Great Britain had a VERY strong leader named Winston Churchill. He was made Prime Minister ( leader)  in May of 1940.

This is a picture of Mr. Churchill giving NOT the peace sign, but the “V for Victory sign. His nickname was “The Bulldog” because of how determined he was.

Mr. Churchill could be a very powerful speaker when trying to lift the mood of his people and give them the strength to not give up. Here is just one small part of one of his speeches from that time. He said these words as the Germans were finishing their take over of large parts of France, Belgium and The Netherlands.

Here is something said by Churchill in a speech:

"Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender…"

Soviet Union

Josef Stalin

The leader of The Soviet union was named Josef Stalin. His real last name was Dzhugashvili, but after the Communists took over Russia during WW I he took the name Stalin which means "Man of Steel." There was not a lot of trust between the Soviet Union and the other Allies, but they had a common enemy in Germany. In other words they all hated Germany more than they hated each other. Stalin was a very forceful leader who made his generals do everything he said the way he said.  He even put his own Daughter-In-Law in prison when his own son surrendered to the Germans without permission.

Here are some words from a Stalin speech:

November 7th, 1941

COMRADES, men of the Red Army and Red Navy, commanders and political instructors, working men and working women, collective farmers-men and women, workers in the intellectual professions, brothers and sisters in the rear of our enemy who have temporarily fallen under the control of the German nasty ones, and our brave men and women fighters who are destroying the rear of the German invaders!

The mean attack of the German nasty ones and the war which has been forced upon us have created a threat to our country. We have temporarily lost a number of regions, the enemy has appeared at the gates of Leningrad and Moscow. The enemy thought that after the very first blow our army would be dispersed, and our country would be forced to her knees. But the enemy miscalculated BIG.
In spite of temporary reverses, our Army and Navy are heroically repulsing the enemy’s attacks along the entire front and causing heavy losses upon him."
